CHICOPEE — Chicopee police officers and firefighters, EMTs, state and city officials, employees and community members gathered on the morning of Sept. 11 at the Public Safety Complex to remember and honor all those who sacrificed and lost their lives after the tragedies that took place 24 years ago.
Although the tragic event took place so many years ago, many remember exactly where they were when the attacks took place and the stories of heroism after is the reason we will never forget.
The ceremony included a prayer from Rev. Robert Gentile from Saint Rose DeLima parish, the reading of the Firefighter’s and Police prayer followed by a moment of silence to reflect.
The Chicopee Police Department posted a statement that read, “On this day in 2001, members of the NYPD and NYFD began their days like any other, not knowing that it was going to be a day marked in history forever. We will never forget the sacrifices they made as they rushed into danger to save others.”
Gov. Maura Healey ordered all U.S. American and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
