CHICOPEE — Chicopee kicked off the holiday season with its annual tree lighting on Dec. 6 on the City Hall Campus.
The festivities began with some Christmas carols and a performance by a local dance team. ChicopeeFresh was also there giving out soup to combat the cold temperatures.
At 5 p.m., sirens blared as Santa and Mayor John Vieau arrived with Santa in a fire truck. Once they made it to the front of the crowd, they led the ceremonial tree lighting.
Following the tree lighting, everyone gathered inside the City Hall Auditorium to meet with Santa, enjoy some snacks and hot chocolate along with other performances.
Vieau had a message for all the residents and said, “As we kick off the holiday season with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. We’re all very thankful for what we have, and I wish you all a very happy, healthy, prosperous New Year and I’m excited about the holiday season. I hope you all are. If you’re not in the holiday spirit I hope today puts you in it.”
