CHICOPEE — Chicopee police officers and firefighters, EMTs, state and city officials, employees and community members gathered on the morning of Sept. 11 at the Public Safety Complex to remember and honor all those who those who sacrificed and lost their lives after the tragedies that took place 23 years ago.

Although the tragic event took place so many years ago, many remember exactly where they were when the attacks took place and the stories of heroism after is the reason we will never forget.

The ceremony included a prayer from Rev. Robert Gentile from Saint Rose DeLima parish, the reading of the Firefighter’s and Police prayer followed by a moment of silence to reflect.

The Chicopee Department of Veteran Services posted a statement that read, “Each Sept. 11, we remember that tragic day in 2001 when terrorists attacked our country and the values we hold dear. Today, we honor all of those who lost their lives and the heroism exhibited by our first responders. We also reflect on the extraordinary display of unity and patriotism that followed that tragic day. May we #NeverForget 9/11.”

Gov. Maura Healey ordered all U.S. American and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
