EASTHAMPTON — On May 10, the roads of Hadley will once again rumble with the sound of engines and the strength of community as dozens gather for Jesse’s Ride — an annual motorcycle memorial ride hosted in honor of Jesse Johansmeyer, a young man remembered for his zest for life, love of adventure, and the warmth he brought to those around him.
“Jesse was full of life — he loved adventure, the outdoors and being surrounded by the people he cared about,” said Devon Glynn, a close friend and the lead organizer of the ride. “Whether he was riding motorcycles, rock climbing, swimming in rivers, gaming or just spending time with family and friends, he embraced every moment.”
The ride, which began as a way to cope with sudden loss, has since become a powerful symbol of remembrance, healing and advocacy. Jesse’s Ride keeps his memory alive and supports causes that reflect his values and bring awareness to issues close to his loved ones’ hearts.
“We hold this ride each year to honor Jesse’s vibrant spirit and to carry on his legacy,” Glynn said. “It’s our way of keeping his memory alive while also raising awareness for causes that matter deeply to us — grief support, the dangers of hit-and-run incidents, and the importance of calling 911 when an emergency happens.”
Proceeds from the event are donated to the Easthampton Dog Park, a local space that organizers say Jesse “would have loved to take his dogs and a cause he’d be proud to support.” The dog park was recently denied Community Preservation Act funding, so events like this one have become even more important.
This year’s ride will begin and end at the Hadley Young Men’s Club, with a scenic 45-minute to one-hour loop through the Pioneer Valley. While motorcycles are the centerpiece of the event, everyone is welcome to join, especially for the post-ride gathering.
“This is an annual event that brings riders together to celebrate Jesse’s life,” said Glynn. “And if you don’t have a motorcycle, just come to the after-party. After the ride, everyone gathers for an after-party where we share stories, connect and continue honoring Jesse’s legacy in a joyful, meaningful way.”
The message of the day goes beyond remembrance. Organizers also hope to inspire action and support for those dealing with grief.
“We hope people leave with a deeper awareness of how important it is to know where and how to access grief support,” Glynn said. “Grief is a heavy journey, but no one should have to walk it alone. We also want to stress how crucial it is to call 911 if you witness an accident — doing so can literally save a life.”
In addition to the annual ride, the Jesse’s Ride team participates in bike nights and fundraising events throughout the year, spreading the message to “Live Life Like Jesse.”
“Jesse’s impact didn’t end with his life — and through this ride and the community that supports it, we keep his spirit moving forward,” Glynn said. “We want people to feel seen, supported, and inspired to live life with purpose, kindness, and compassion — just like Jesse did.”
Registration begins at 8 a.m. with kickstands up at 11 a.m. The after-party, with food, drinks, raffles and live music by Hard Cover, is scheduled to begin at noon. The cost is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers.
