SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Plan B Burger Bar will be among the three locations to close in the area by Aug. 31.
As part of a “strategic realignment of its footprint,” the chain announced on Aug. 26 that it will not renew leases at its Hartford, West Hartford and Springfield eateries.
“This decision reflects a balance between fiscal responsibility and staying true to the experience our guests and teams deserve,” Allie J. Gamble, Plan B founder and CEO, said in a statement.
At its peak, Plan B had 11 restaurants across four states. Now, the chain will operate the three it has remaining: one in Milford, one in Glastonbury and one in Simsbury.
Reminder Publishing attempted to reach Gamble for additional comment on the closures, but a spokesperson said he was busy at the restaurants and suggested that quotes be taken from the release that was sent.
According to that press release, all employed team members at the three closing locations will receive severance pay, and leadership is working to replace team members at other restaurants.
All Plan B gift cards will be honored at the remaining locations, the announcement said.
“This isn’t just about restaurants closing, it’s about honoring what those places meant to people,” Gamble said, in his statement. “Our goal now is to carry that same energy and connection into the restaurants we continue to own and operate, while holding deep gratitude for the communities that helped us grow.”
It is currently unclear why the chain is not renewing their leases. In its announcement, Plan B stated that the “transition reflects both the business realities of operating long-term locations while preserving the brand’s commitment to high-touch service, local connection and exceptional food and drink.”
According to the Hampden County Registry of Deeds, the Springfield restaurant owes the state approximately $658,200 in meals, food and beverage tax along with paid family and medical leave. The Massachusetts tax liens were filed over the last three years.
The chain was founded in 2006, and the Springfield location opened in 2012.
Reminder Publishing attempted to reach Colebrook Realty Services, the manager of the Hall of Fame complex, but did not hear back by press time.
