SPRINGFIELD — The Nov. 4 general election is just a couple weeks away, which means Reminder Publishing is continuing its coverage of the candidates.

In one School Committee race, District 2 incumbent Barbara Gresham is facing off against challenger Giselle Gaines during the Nov. 4 general election.

Both candidates were provided with the same questions about their background and future goals if they were elected.

District 2 covers Wards 4 & 5 in Springfield.

Gresham did not respond to multiple emails involving this Q&A.

Reminder Publishing: What qualities or experiences make you qualified to serve on the School Committee?

Gaines: I bring both lived experience and leadership in public service. As a mother of six, four on the autism spectrum, I understand the challenges families face in our schools. Politically, I’ve served as the Community Outreach Officer for the Ward 4 Democratic Committee and as the first Latina on the South End Citizens Council, always working to lift neighborhood voices. Professionally, I work for Careforth, supporting caregivers and people with disabilities across Western Massachusetts. My record shows I know how to advocate, build coalitions, and create solutions that put families and students first.

RP: In your eyes, what are the top two most important issues facing the School Committee in the next 12 months?

Gaines: First, addressing the projected deficit, growing from $23.5 million in FY25 to $51.4 million by FY28 due to increased Required Local Contribution, rising charter school tuition ($96.4 million in FY25), and higher non-Net School Spending costs like transportation. Effective management of the $627.3 million FY25 budget is crucial to maintain educational services. Second, we must expand trauma-informed and behavioral health supports in schools. Our kids are carrying stress, hunger, and trauma into the classroom. We must ensure they have safe environments, mental health resources, and teachers equipped with the tools to help them succeed.

RP: What is your overall message to voters ahead of the election?

Gaines: It takes a village to raise, protect, and educate our children. I am running to be a resourceful, innovative voice on the School Committee — someone who won’t back down when cuts threaten meals, mental health services, or opportunities. I live here, I raise my family here, and I know firsthand what’s at stake. My message is simple: every child deserves to have their needs met, and every parent deserves a seat at the table. Together, we can build the village our children deserve.
