SOMERS — For the last 50 years, the Somers Knights of Columbus Council 4303, Lions and Rotary Club have joined together to offer a Christmas banquet to the town’s senior citizens — an event that brings them together for an afternoon of talking, connecting and a turkey feast.
This year’s banquet will take place on Dec. 15.
“There are no awards or honors — all seniors are afforded equal dignity and respect,” explained Council board member Jack O’Brien, one of the organizers. “We [the club members] are gifted with the joy of seeing local seniors have the ability to get together with colleagues and friends, some of whom only get to renew long-term friendships at this annual event. We also enjoy each other’s company in hosting and working together in the production of community service.”
In 1974, the same three clubs hosted the original banquet thinking it would be a one-time thing. Although the event hasn’t changed much over the years, it is that constant friendship, camaraderie and community involvement that continue to make the event special to all those involved.
“We expected to have a single senior event, but it was so well received, and so much enjoyed by the seniors we decided to do it again and again and again,” explained O’Brien. “A classic case of events morphing into a tradition. I suspect that as long as the clubs can afford to it will continue.”
Throughout the last 50 years, the three organizing clubs have been assisted by a range of community organizations, including the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts from Somers. Those children have created trinkets and gifts for the occasions as well as served the meal. Some of those who served in the early years of the banquet now attend as senior citizens.
Doors open for the banquet at 11 a.m. at the Somers Knights of Columbus Hall at 236 Main St. in Somers. Serving dinner will begin at 1 p.m. Parking assistance will be available for those in need. The event is free and no reservations are necessary.
