SOMERS — The 88th Annual Hartford County 4-H Fair is taking place Friday, Aug. 16 to Sunday, Aug. 18 at 56 Egypt Rd. in Somers. This three-day fair is a fun-filled time for attendees of all ages with 4-H livestock exhibits, non-animal exhibits and demonstrations, food trucks, live music, entertainment, car shows, magic shows and much more.

4-H is an organization that serves over six million youth across the United States who are learning STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — leadership, civic engagement, healthy living, and life skills through their 4-H project work with the support of 4-H volunteers.

4-H is a national organization. In this state, the University of Connecticut 4-H is open to youth ages 5-19. The 4-H program is the positive youth development program of extension within the UConn College of Agriculture, Heath, and Natural Resources.

Hartford County 4-H Extension Educator Jennifer Cushman said, “We would love for the general public to come out, see the great work that our 4-H’ers are doing and learn more about the STEM, healthy living, and civic engagement projects that the youth are engaged in and enjoy the fair. It is also an opportunity to learn more about the 4-H organization and ways youth and adults can engage.”

Tickets are $6 for general admission, $4 for veterans and seniors, and free for children 3 and under. The fair will open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds go directly to the Hartford County Fair Association to cover fair operation expenses and youth programs.

“This youth run fair showcases the dedication and hard work of the Hartford County 4-H youth who have been preparing their projects throughout the year,” Cushman said. “The youth are able to take the skills and knowledge that they learned throughout the year as a 4-H project member in projects and bring those projects to the fair, exhibit those projects and receive feedback from experts within that specific project area. The most rewarding part for me is watching the youth grow and develop their knowledge and skills over their time in 4-H.”
