It has been a privilege to serve on the Longmeadow School Committee for the past three years. I had hoped to continue to serve in this capacity for another term, but I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer–expected treatment outcomes are very good. Although my name will appear on the ballot, I will be unable to serve. I am appreciative of this opportunity to share my hopes for the direction of Longmeadow Public Schools.
Our current middle school facilities no longer meet the needs of our students from an educational and safety perspective. The School Committee must continue to engage the Massachusetts School Building Authority to receive necessary funding to rebuild. Also, the School Committee must continue to seek input from Longmeadow stakeholders to ensure that this critical initiative moves forward.
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of high-quality curriculum resources. “High-quality curriculum resources” meet grade-level standards and are delivered using engaging, inclusive, research-based instructional strategies. In order for these resources to be implemented appropriately, teachers need access to curriculum-specific, ongoing professional learning.
Longmeadow educators are top-notch, and it is the responsibility of the School Committee to advocate for the best resources and professional development available to support their work. Recently, residents voted to approve a new elementary literacy program grounded in the Science of Reading. I hope to see the same support as curriculum materials across grade levels and content areas are renewed.
