With hot days ahead, Reminder Publishing compiled a list of cooling stations available in local cities and towns for residents to beat the heat this summer. This list will be updated throughout the summer and as more cooling locations become available. If your town is not listed check with your local library or senior center.
Agawam
Agawam will have two cooling locations available throughout the summer. The Agawam Senior Center, located at 854 Main St. is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Agawam Public Library, located at 750 Cooper St., is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Enfield
Enfield will be opening four locations as cooling centers as part of the town’s extreme hot weather protocol. The Enfield Senior Center will be open June 23 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and June 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; The Enfield Central Library, located at 104 Middle Rd., will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 23-25; The Pearl Street Library, located at 159 Pearl St., will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 23-25; and the Enfield Police Department, located at 293 Elm St. is available as a temporary cooling center 24 hours each day.
Easthampton
Beginning on Monday, June 23, Easthampton will be opening the Council on Aging, located at 19 Union St. as a cooling center. The cooling center will be open through Wednesday, June 25 and it will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Holyoke
In Holyoke several cooling centers will be open from June 23 to 25 during their regular business hours. These centers include War Memorial Building at 310 Appleton St., which is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the Center for Human Development (CHD) at 696 Dwight St., which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Holyoke Public Library at 250 Chestnut St., which is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and the Holyoke Senior Center at 291 Pine St., which is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Northampton
Several locations in Northampton will be operating as a cooling center from June 23-25. These include the Division of Community Care, located at 1 Roundhouse Plaza, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the Forbes Library, located at 20 West St. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Manna, located at 48 Elm St., from10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Northampton Senior Center, located at 67 Conz St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the CSO Shelter, located at 29 Industrial St. East, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Northampton Police Station lobby, which is open 24/7; and Thornes Marketplace, which also has a water bottle fill station and is located at 150 Main St; is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Lilly Library, located at 19 Meadow St. in Florence, will also be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 and 24, but will be closed June 25.
Springfield
Springfield announced that the city will have various cooling centers open from June 23 to 25 in anticipation of the heatwave. The Indian Orchard Community Center at Myrtle Street Park, located at 117 Main St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the South End Community, located at Center 99 Marble St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center, located at 1476 Roosevelt Ave., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Senior Center in the North End at Kenefick Park, located at 310 Plainfield St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Mason Square Library Community Room, located at 765 State Street, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Hungry Hill Senior Center, located at 773 Liberty St., will be open from from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the Clodo Concepcion (Greenleaf) Community Center, which is located at 1187 ½ Parker St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and the Forest Park Library, located at 380 Belmont Ave., will be open from 1-5 p.m.
Westfield
While Westfield will not be opening cooling centers specifically for the upcoming heatwave, Executive Assistant to the Mayor Amy Tosi said that both the Westfield Athenaeum and Senior Center will be open for regular business hours both days for residents who need to get out of the heat. The Athenaeum, located at 6 Elm St., is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and the Senior Center, located at 45 Noble St. is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
