The Porter Memorial Library at 87 Main Street in Blandford will host a talk by Blandford native John Crane on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m.
The talk, “My Thoughts Turn Often to Home” recounts his grandfather James Crane’s personal experiences in World War I through his own words, revealing a story of courage and longing ahead of Veteran’s Day.
Crane was a corporal in the Machine Gun Company of the 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division. His grandson, John Crane, will share excerpts from the diary his grandfather kept during his time at the front in the Great War. The entries recount times of both tedium and terror in the trenches of France, and cover his service from February 1918 until his return to the U.S. in May of 1919.
The event is free and open to the public. The diary may be read in PDF form before the presentation. Email blandfordporterlibrary@gmail.com to to read the diary ahead of time.
Huntington
The Huntington Public Library on 7 East Main St. will host a talk on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., by Huntington author and artist Steve Hamlin, who will share insights from his latest book, “Travel on $50/Day (or Less!),” a practical and inspiring guide to affordable adventures.
The book draws on many years of experience and ten-plus years of keeping detailed records describing proven techniques for affordable, rewarding motor-touring. Hamlin said the book focuses on the logistics of motor camping and tent camping, interwoven with anecdotes from trips taken by Steve and his wife Linda Hamlin, which he said illustrate the how-to aspects of the book.
During his talk, Hamlin will share tips for budget-friendly travel and stories from the road, followed by a lively Q&A session. Don’t miss this chance to support local talent and discover how to make your next trip unforgettable—without breaking the bank.
The event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the library.
