SPRINGFIELD — Election season is in full swing with half a dozen contested races for the state House of Representatives and Senate in Hampden County. With primaries for these races on Sept. 3, Reminder Publishing wanted to provide information on polling places in Springfield.

As the third-largest city in the state and the largest in Western Massachusetts, it should be no surprise that Springfield has dozens of polling locations — 42, in fact. All polling places in the state will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the day of the primary.

Voters must be registered by Aug. 24 to vote in the primary. Vote-by-mail applications will be accepted until Aug. 26. To register to vote, individuals must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of the municipality in which they want to vote and 18 years of age or older on or before the day of voting. Those you are not yet 18, can pre-register to vote by the Aug. 24 deadline.

Voter registration forms can be requested by calling the clerk’s office in the municipality or downloading a mail-in form at tinyurl.com/5bzajpvf. Registration can also be completed in person at the offices of clerks, election commissions or boards of registrars, the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth Elections Division or the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s regional offices.

Voter registration can also be completed while applying for or renew a driver’s license, permit or state ID at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, applying for MassHealth benefits online, in person or by phone or applying for health insurance through the Commonwealth Health Connector.

If a voter arrives at the polling place and is told they are on the inactive voter list, they can still cast a ballot.

“[Voters] are not required to show photo ID and they must still be allowed to vote, even if they do not have ID. Once they sign the form to confirm their residence, they are placed back on the list of active voters,” City Clerk and Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola-Lopez said in an email. “In fact, if a voter who hasn’t moved out of the city is removed from the voter list due to inactivity, that voter is entitled to vote on a provisional ballot, and the law requires that the provisional ballot be counted.”

The following is a list of Springfield’s polling locations. If unsure of which polling place to use, call the city’s Elections Division at 413-787-6190.
