SPRINGFIELD — Get ready for vibrant colors, lively music and dancing in the street as the Springfield Caribbean Carnival & Parade returns on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The Caribbean American African Athletic Social Club is a nonprofit working to enhance the cultural, social, educational and spiritual awareness of Caribbean cultures in the Greater Springfield area since 1998. The Springfield Caribbean Carnival & Parade is the largest and most public event put on by the group.
The parade will step off at noon from the Early Childhood Center on Catherine Street and follow State Street toward Blunt Park. Elected officials, community groups, businesses and nonprofits are expected to participate in the 1.5-mile parade
Acting President and Treasurer Delva Campbell said the thing that separates the Caribbean Parade from other community parades is the colors on display. “Every island is different,” she said of their culture and colors. There are about 30 separate island nations and territories in the Caribbean, and the parade represents many of them. “There’s lots of colors, a lot of music and a lot of dancing in the street,” she said.
Once the parade reaches Blunt Park, it will meet a carnival atmosphere with music, live performances, Caribbean artisans, cultural workshops, children’s activities and various Caribbean foods, as well as American fare.
The free, family-friendly festival ends at 8:30 p.m. In addition to the large Caribbean population in Western Massachusetts, the event draws people from Boston, Connecticut, New York and Florida. Campbell said there are, “Usually 600 to 1,000 people at any given time. People come and go.” In total, between 3,000 and 4,000 people attend the event each year.
“We need the community to come out and support it. The only way we can make it a big thing for the day is for the community to come out,” Campbell said.
