Wilbraham fundraiser supports families affected by dementia

WILBRAHAM — An evening of wine, conversation and community will offer more than just an opportunity to raise a glass this November, as the Friends of Wilbraham Seniors host “A Toast to Memories,” a fundraiser supporting individuals living with dementia and the families and caregivers who care for them.

The event will take place Friday, Nov. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the Wilbraham Senior Center. Tickets are $40 and are available at the Senior Center.

Held in recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, the event is intended to bring people together to make new memories while supporting those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Barbara Harrington, social services coordinator, said dementia has touched countless families in the community, creating emotional and physical challenges for both those experiencing memory loss and their loved ones.

“Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have touched so many families in our community, and we recognize the emotional and physical challenges faced not only by those living with memory loss but also by the loved ones who care for them,” Harrington said.

The inspiration for the fundraiser grew out of the work of Age & Dementia Friendly Wilbraham, where staff and volunteers see firsthand the importance of connection and support for individuals and caregivers.

“While raising funds to support programs such as our Memory Café and caregiver resources is certainly important, our hope is to accomplish something even greater,” Harrington said. “We want to raise awareness, encourage conversations about dementia, and remind families that they are not alone on this journey.”

Guests at “A Toast to Memories” can enjoy a selection of red, white and sparkling wines provided by The Wine Exchange of Springfield, along with light refreshments, raffles and special guest speakers. Country Bank, Hampden Post Acute and The Wine Exchange are supporting the event.

A guest speaker also will share a personal perspective on caring for a loved one living with dementia, offering attendees an opportunity to better understand the experiences and emotions faced by caregivers.

For Harrington, that personal connection is an important part of the evening.

“Dementia doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed; it touches the lives of spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, and everyone who loves them,” she said.

The fundraiser also will support programs offered through the Wilbraham Senior Center and Age & Dementia Friendly Wilbraham, including the monthly Memory Café and Memory Lane program, which provide opportunities for socialization, meaningful activities and connection.

Daytime and evening caregiver support groups offer another important resource, giving caregivers a place to share experiences, find encouragement and connect with others who understand the challenges they face.

Funds raised through the event will help continue and expand these programs, as well as provide additional caregiver support, educational opportunities and resources.

Harrington said creating an age- and dementia-friendly community means ensuring that older adults and people living with memory loss can remain safe, respected, included and connected. It also means recognizing that caregivers need support, too.

“While we may not be able to change a diagnosis, we can certainly change how individuals and families experience the journey by surrounding them with understanding, kindness, and support,” Harrington said.

Ultimately, organizers hope “A Toast to Memories” will leave attendees with more than an appreciation for a good glass of wine.

“If even one family walks away knowing that support and resources are available to them, we have accomplished something truly meaningful,” Harrington said.
