ENFIELD — Art will take on a new dimension this fall when Art Squash Enfield returns to historic Thompson Hall, 4 Alden Ave., in Thompsonville, inviting visitors not simply to view artwork, but to become part of the exhibition.
Now in its second year, Art Squash Enfield will feature artists working in a variety of mediums under this year’s theme, “Townscape.” According to Joyce Bolanos, Enfield Culture and Arts Commissioner and director of Art Squash Enfield, the event is designed to be an immersive experience that celebrates both the town’s history and its creative future.
“Prepare to be amazed,” Bolanos said. “This year, Art Squash Enfield is an interactive celebration where visitors step into a living townscape, a vibrant recreation of the historic Enfield landscape.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to paint directly on a massive townscape canvas while exploring a reimagined version of Enfield’s streets and landmarks.
“You won’t just observe art here; you’ll become part of it,” Bolanos said. “This isn’t a passive gallery experience. Art Squash is a powerful movement, a revival of the arts right here in Enfield, breathing new life into our community and reclaiming our town’s creative spirit.”
The “Townscape” theme encourages artists to consider Enfield from multiple perspectives, including its past, present and possible future.
“Enfield stands at a critical crossroads, and that’s exactly what inspired us,” Bolanos said. “Our town’s historical buildings are treasures that make Enfield irreplaceable, yet they need our commitment to preserve them.”
Artists were invited to participate regardless of their experience level, creating an exhibition that will include both established artists and first-time exhibitors.
“We opened our doors with a call to all artists — seasoned professionals and brave newcomers alike,” Bolanos said. “That’s the beautiful magic of Art Squash!”
The result, she said, will be an eclectic collection of artwork and perspectives.
“Expect the unexpected. A stunning range of mediums and perspectives that will surprise and inspire you,” Bolanos said.
The setting itself is an important part of the experience. Thompson Hall, one of the region’s remaining examples of historic architectural character, provides a backdrop that connects directly to the exhibition’s focus on place and preservation.
“Hosting Art Squash here isn’t just practical; it’s poetic,” Bolanos said. “Our artists are literally creating within the walls of the very history and character they’re exploring through their work.”
Bolanos said the inaugural Art Squash was met with enthusiasm from both artists and visitors, helping shape this year’s expanded experience.
“Last year was extraordinary, such a resounding success that both our artists and visitors are hungry for more,” she said.
The exhibition will open with a public reception Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m., giving visitors an opportunity to meet the participating artists, enjoy refreshments and preview the artwork.
Special programming will continue Saturday, Oct. 24, including a performance at 2 p.m. by the Enfield High School Jazz Ensemble featuring classic 1940s tunes. Bolanos encourages attendees to embrace the theme by dressing in 1940s attire and becoming part of the historic atmosphere.
“Stroll through our Townscape and become part of Enfield’s living history and celebrate what makes our town so special,” she said.
Art Squash Enfield will also be open Saturday from 1-5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1-4 p.m.
Admission is free, and the event is family-friendly.
For Bolanos, the larger goal extends beyond a single weekend.
“I hope you leave understanding that Enfield has the potential to become a creative hub for our entire region,” she said. “The passion is here. The talent is here. We simply needed to ignite it, to create a space where Enfield’s inner creative fire could shine.”
