WILBRAHAM — The Wilbraham Art League is encouraging the public to learn about all things art by meeting local artists and viewing original art pieces at an open house on Sept. 8.
The free event runs from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Wilbraham Senior Center, 250 Springfield St.
The Art League, founded in 2007, encourages and supports artists and the arts in Wilbraham and surrounding towns. It holds meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, besides July and August, for art demonstrations.
Artist demonstrations can include using watercolors, creating wallpaper portraits, painting techniques, styles of painting and pastel art.
Artists have an opportunity to learn from other artists, build friendships through creative experience and enjoy a sense of community with people who share similar interests when joining the group.
Art League Website and Publicity Officer Roger Kellman said the group helps artists with generating new ideas and expanding their artistic efforts.
He added the open house is an opportunity for the public and non-artists to discover what the group does in the community. For those interested in art, it’s a chance to explore the work that the group does to assist developing arts.
“Anyone interested in art will benefit from stopping in,” Kellman said. “You don’t need to be an artist or even interested in doing art. Come to learn about art in general and how the member artists create their work. You will have the chance to chat with the artists and view their work in the center’s large activity room where the walls will be filled with paintings in various styles and mediums, or just come for the refreshments.”
Kellman said the Art League is a friendly group that is open and always interested in helping new artists explore their abilities and their artistic journey.
“The open house is something new for the Wilbraham Art League,” Kellman said. “We’re really trying to put ourselves out there and invite the larger community and people who are not artists but just appreciate art. Come in and explore.”
The Art League’s work can be viewed for most of the year in the senior center’s activity room, with displays changing every two months.
The public can also attend shows to see new work, with a few currently scheduled for November at the Wilbraham Public Library and Agawam Public Library.
