SOMERS — DIY Treats 4 Dogs are the first of their kind to offer a dog treat decorating studio in the United States and are proud to be opening in Somers.

Located at 8B South Rd., DIY Treats 4 Dogs offer a wide range of different shaped homemade treats that can be customized in their themed workshops that will spoil people’s dogs.

Owner Donna Shovlin said, “We had our grand opening on Nov. 16. We wanted people to come in, experience who we are and what we’re all about. The turnout was great and it was fun.”

DIY Treats 4 Dogs have themed workshops for all ages. They offer seasonal workshops, such as “Tom the Turkey” for Thanksgiving and cute gingerbread men for Christmas. They also offer workshops to decorate a birthday cake for your dog. The workshops range from $35-$55 depending on the number of dog treats that are included.

They also have a dog bakery and pet boutique that is normally open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including special hours during their workshops and on holidays, such as Christmas Eve. The boutique sells pre-decorated treats, toys and other cute items for dogs.

DIY Treats 4 Dogs is the sister company of Pastries 4 Pets Inc., one of the pet industry leaders of dog safe icing and frosting products.
Shovlin opened Pastries 4 Pets Inc as a retail dog bakery 12 years ago and pivoted to keep up with the supply and demand of their dog bakery ingredients. Shovlin had a great opportunity to reopen a small dog bakery and pet boutique, so she’s opening it as DIY Treats 4 Dogs and have added the unique dog treat decorating workshops.

“We want to offer something to do that’s fun,” said Shovlin. “We know that with most people’s dogs are family members to them and it’s just really nice to be able to spoil their dogs, so we decided to create the place to go if you want to spoil your dogs and have fun while doing it.”

She continued, “DIY Treats 4 Dogs is special because it is the only place currently in the USA to go if you want to spoil your dogs by decorating adorable dog treats for them. You can come in by yourself or with a group of friends and decorate and sip with an instructor guiding you every step of the way as you decorate cute treats. We also offer children’s workshops and chef coats are available for those who want to become true pastry chefs for a couple of hours.”

Somers’ resident Meg Munson has known Shovlin for a couple of years and was excited to see her new spot was going to be in Somers.
“I love her new space,” Munson said. “The class area is so spacious and bright. This is such a fun way to get together with friends or your kids and make some special treats for your pup.”

She went on to say, “I think this is a great addition to the town if you are looking for something fun and creative to do. Donna teaches you everything and she makes it fun too.”

DIY’s current goal is to provide a fun place for people to come and socialize in-person; they strive to offer new and exciting things for people to do in the community. They also want to do more with local businesses, such as team-building activities for their employees.

“The best part of teaching people how to decorate dog treats at DIY Treats 4 Dogs is having fun while doing it,” Shovlin said. “I find it very rewarding to see what others create with my dog safe icing that I sell worldwide. I also find happiness in knowing that they will continue to have fun once they go home and spoil their dogs with the treats they created during their workshop.”

She continued, “The dog treat platters also make perfect gifts for their friends and families. Including hostess or host presents when they are visiting during the holidays, no one refuses a gift for their dog, it really makes the perfect gift for those who tell you not to bring them anything.”
