WESTFIELD – Shirley Coffey, 93, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025. She was born in Springfield MA to the late Arthur Glidden and Florence (Cox) Glidden and was lovingly raised by her grandparents Josie and Leon Glidden. Shirley graduated from Agawam High School in 1949 and worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 31 years before retiring in 1987. While employed at Metropolitan, Shirley studied very hard to earn her Life Office Management Association (LOMA) certificate.
Over the years, Shirley enjoyed singing in the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament church choir, camping with her family and friends in Burlingame State Park in Rhode Island and playing the slot machines at Foxwoods. She loved cryptograms and Sudoku puzzles. She also loved to work in her back yard and burn the trees she cut down by hand! Shirley cherished her grandchildren beyond measure and looked forward to Sunday dinners with the family.
Shirley is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Daniel E Coffey. She leaves her daughter Diane Kelly and her husband Ed, as well as her grandchildren Catherine (Katie Anna to Grammee) and Jonathan and his wife Destiny. She is also predeceased by her Aunt Ruth Hafner and Cousin Janice Livingston.
A service to celebrate both Shirley and Dan will be held at a later date at the discretion of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Baystate Health Foundation Hospice Care, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
