WE ARE HOMETOWN NEWS.

WEST SPRINGFIELD — The West Springfield Town Common will once again have an incandescent glow this year to honor family friends, neighbors and colleagues who have encountered cancer.

The Center of Human Development Cancer House of Hope is hosting its annual luminaria event at the Town Common on Dec. 9 to celebrate those with a cancer diagnosis.

“Every year we have upwards of 1,000 luminarias lit to remember and honor loved ones who have lost their battle to cancer, are fighting their battle or have won their battle,” said Margaret Toomey, CHH’s program director. “The flickering light from our lit candles brings strength, hope, light and warmth.”

The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 5 p.m. featuring a lighting ceremony with West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt, and the luminaria display will last until 7 p.m.

According to the Cancer House of Hope, proceeds from the event will help to fund the wellness programs and support services offered at Cancer House of Hope, including the wig boutique, massages, reiki, yoga, support groups and a host of other therapeutic resources.

“Your donation is a true gift to all who come through our doors seeking connection, community, and relief from the physical and emotional challenges of having cancer,” the Cancer House of Hope’s website reads.

In preparation for the event, Toomey said the house has approximately 75 volunteers on board who will help with set up, luminaria lighting and cleanup.

“Participants of all age groups are involved,” Toomey said. “Local high schools include West Springfield High School, Westfield Vocational Tech, Westfield High School Key Club and Agawam High School. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, as well as many community partners also help.”

Set-up for the luminaria display will occur from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 9 and cleanup will start at 7 p.m. According to Cancer House of Hope, 25-30 luminaria lighters will be needed by 5 p.m. to light the entire display.
