NORTHAMPTON — In following up with local state legislators, Reminder Publishing spoke with state Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa (D-Northampton) to discuss the year ahead, after her reelection to the role last November.
Now entering her fourth term as a state representative, Sabadosa said one of the most important aspects of her role is listening to constituents — something important required for the position that she shared has become clearer as her experience grew.
“While it is important to be in Boston, I have learned that finding the right balance is critical because there is no way to understand the pulse of the district without showing up and talking to people,” Sabadosa said. “This can be done informally at community events or even just by volunteering. This, I believe, makes me more effective because I can file better budget proposals, better legislation, and find more common ground with colleagues whose constituents are experiencing similar issues.”
Being an effective communicator of constituent’s thoughts and concerns is one reason why Sabadosa feels they have reelected her multiple times now. She added not only are her constituents extremely vocal, but they also work hard and show up through outreach.
Whether it be monthly newsletters, periodic mailings or hosting town halls in all of the communities represented in her district, keeping people regularly informed establishes an open communication status between the people and Sabadosa, which helps her best represent her district.
“We also try to get involved in other local campaigns, often for ballot questions, so we are knocking on doors and meeting people,” Sabadosa said. “It’s really hard for most people to find the time to learn what is going on in state government but hearing from them is really critical to do this job well and to represent the district to the best of my ability.”
Specifically looking ahead to the 2025 session, Sabadosa said her constituents have been clear they want to see legislators working on protecting the rights of individuals now with a new presidential administration that has so far been aggressively working to pass executive orders and changes to the government in line with their policies. She added issues such as housing and climate change are still on her advocacy agenda as she focuses on her priorities for 2025.
“As such, my priorities include protecting the right to choose, supporting our immigrant community and safeguarding the civil rights of our LGBTQ community. Additionally, many constituents are concerned about the rising cost of housing and energy, as well as the brutal effects of climate change. I will continue to work on these issues with colleagues to make Massachusetts the best place to live,” Sabadosa said.
She noted, it is anticipated that funding for the upcoming year may be tight given the new administration’s “lack of support for states.” She added she and fellow legislators are ready to work on finding the best ways to protect Massachusetts residents and offer the same services they have come to expect, but it won’t come without its challenges.
“These may be very difficult years,” Sabadosa said. “It is important to reach out to legislators, so we understand your priorities as we navigate this time of uncertainty.”
