BELCHERTOWN — Ann Kuchieski, who has been a mainstay at the Clapp Memorial Library’s service desk since 1994 is retiring from her position as circulation and reference librarian.

“After 30 years, it’s time for the next chapter in my life,” said Kuchieski. “I will miss all the patrons that I’ve gotten to know, getting the chance to see people as they come in and helping them pick out books.”

Kuchieski’s last day was Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Library Director Cyndi Harbeson said, “Ann is such an instrumental part of the Clapp Memorial Library and has made a real difference in the community throughout her tenure,” She continued, “Ann has done three very successful long standing book clubs. She provides excellent customer service at the desk every day and is very welcoming to all of our patrons. It’s going to be a real difference without her, but we’re very excited for Ann and the next phase in her life.”

Kuchieski started on April 1, 1994. She was excited about trying something new and getting a chance to meet people in the community.

“When I started it was a part-time position,” Kuchieski mentioned. “As time passed, it became a full-time position. I’ve always loved my job. I love what I do.”

Throughout her tenure at the library, Kuchieski has instituted many popular programs including three book groups: the Clapp Critics, the Wednesday Whodunnits and a Cookbook Club. She was instrumental in bringing an adult summer reading program to the Clapp Memorial Library, which saw a record number of 250 plus patrons participating this summer. She had a book recommendation ready for fans of mysteries, contemporary women’s fiction, and political books.

“When I first started, I was fortunate to get to know a lot of the families that came to the library,” Kuchieski said. “Thirty years later, those children have grown up and they’re coming back to the library with their children, so that’s been a delight to see. The next person is fortunate that they’ll be working with a community that is friendly and loves their library.”
