WE ARE HOMETOWN NEWS.

SOMERS — The Somers Fire Department’s annual open house will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 400 Main St.

Everyone is invited to visit the Fire Department and learn about fire safety, see their equipment, fire trucks, and learn what the department does to serve the community.

Capt. Ray Stovall said, “We host one every year in conjunction with fire prevention month. My hopes and goals for this year’s event is that we have a great turnout and that the residents of Somers can understand the importance of fire prevention.”

Fire Chief David Lenart added, “This year’s open house at Station 46 is a valuable opportunity to engage with the community, showcase the department’s services, and promote safety awareness. It’s also a chance to strengthen relationships with local residents and potentially recruit new volunteers.”

This year, the department will show all the residents around their apparatus and ambulances. They will also have a recruitment table and then will do the fire prevention portion where they will have a fire prevention trailer from the Enfield Fire Department and take the children through teaching them kitchen safety, safety in the living room around fire places and how to get low, stay low and evacuate out of a bedroom.

Stovall said, “The takeaway is that we’re their fire department and we’re there to serve the citizens. They’re always welcomed to come down to meet us and understand how hard we work to protect them and how important fire prevention is to us. We would rather prevent a fire ahead of time than go to a fire.”

He continued, “Our goals are always to protect the citizens of Somers to the best of our ability, to train to the highest standard and to be able to respond at a moment’s notice to any emergency that occurs.”

Somers is currently in the process of evaluating and increasing their technical rescue response to the community. They have recently started with a program to replace outdated rope equipment and are working on training its members in new equipment and techniques.
