SPRINGFIELD — Hundreds of people came to Dakin Humane Society on Nov. 9 to shop with craft vendors and, in many cases, take home a new best friend.
Dakin, at 171 Union St. in Springfield, hosted its third annual Whisker Wonderland, a craft fair that brings potential pet owners to Dakin and supports artisans in the community.
“We look at this as a partnership with the community. The community is everything to Dakin. Our neighbors can shop and come in and maybe meet a new family member,” said Community Engagement Manager Kaitlyn Holloway.
In addition to the roughly 40 craft vendors that were set up inside the building and in large tents outside, people were also able to shop in Dakin’s thrift store, where “lightly pawed” items could be bought at a discount, Holloway said. The thrift store, a raffle and a bake sale during the event all benefited Dakin. Some vendors also donated a portion of their profits.
About 500 people visit Dakin during Whisker Wonderland each year. While many are there looking for gifts, pet supplies and decor, many others come to meet the animals that are ready for adoption. Holloway said there are far more cats available than dogs.
Visitors lined up throughout the five-hour event to enter the kitten room.
Halfway through the day, most of the crates were empty, their occupants often having gone home with a family.
