WE ARE HOMETOWN NEWS.

HOLYOKE — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be hosting a public information meeting on Tuesday, June 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holyoke Public Library, 250 Chestnut St., to discuss the proposed corridor improvements project on High and Maple streets.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with an update on the project and to solicit input. All views and comments made at the meeting will be reviewed and considered.

The project consists of transportation safety and mobility improvements along the High Street and Maple Street corridors from South Street to Lyman Street in downtown Holyoke. The project is still in the design phase.

At the June 24 meeting, MassDOT and its team will provide an update on the project status, share preliminary design concepts and solicit feedback from the community to help to inform the further development of the design.

The project is being advanced for inclusion on the State’s Transportation Improvement Program, which, if approved, could allow for full federal funding of construction costs, with the city and MassDOT responsible for design and related activities.

Those unable to attend the meeting are encouraged to email Matthew Sokop, city engineer, at sokopm@holyoke.org with any questions or comments.

Safe and accessible conditions for all modes of transportation including walking, biking, transit and driving will be provided in accordance with applicable design guidelines.

This library is accessible to people with disabilities. MassDOT provides accommodations and/or language assistance free of charge upon request, including but not limited to interpreters in American Sign Language and languages other than English, open or closed captioning for videos, assistive listening devices and alternate material formats, such as audio tapes, Braille and large print, as available.

For accommodation or language assistance, readers can contact MassDOT’s Chief Diversity and Civil Rights Office by phone at 857-368-8580, fax 857-368-0602, or by email MassDOT.CivilRights@dot.state.ma.us.

Requests should be made as soon as possible prior to the meeting. For more difficult to arrange services including sign-language, CART or language translation or interpretation, requests should be made at least 10 business days before the meeting.

In the event of inclement weather, a cancelation announcement will be posted at mass.gov/orgs/highway-division/events.

In February 2024, MassDOT hosted a public comment session to hear from the residents on possibly improvements to High and Maple streets.

Since the public engagement meetings, MassDOT and consultants have completed intersection control evaluations, posted public meeting survey results, met with the Holyoke Bike and Pedestrian Committee, met with the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority and met with the High Street Business Association.

They have gathered all the information and have developed preliminary design concepts to present to the city and public for feedback on June 24.
