SUMMARY:Jazz 101 listening course
DESCRIPTION:Contact Name: Ben Young Contact Phone: 718 594 6670 Contact Email: thatlight19@gmail.com \n \nVenue Name: Holyoke Public Library \nVenue Address: 250 Chestnut Street Holyoke MA 01040 \n \nEvent Details: Beginning on Monday evening September 28\, Holyoke Library will host the Jazz listening history series Jazz 101. The course was developed at Jazz at Lincoln Center 25 years ago. Its eight weekly sessions embrace the breadth of how Jazz music works and where it came from—also how it fits into our culture as an art form and entertainment medium.\nThis will be the first offering of the course in Holyoke.\nAlthough it’s a curated\, organized listening-and-lecture course\, the emphasis is on demystifying Jazz content for beginners. We introduce basic terms\, fundamental concepts\, and cornerstone figures in the music. And of course we listen closely to the swinging\, essential masterpiece recordings of Jazz.\nAre you curious\, or even skeptical? Let’s face it: Jazz can be a little daunting\, hard to grasp\, or obscure. In Jazz 101 we don’t try to make you into a great Jazz musician\, but into a great listener—who can understand and appreciate what you’re hearing.\nThe course is free to all. No registration necessary; just come on by.\nThere’s also no test\, no homework\, no entrance exam\, no audition\, no roll-call—no stress. Just great sounds and stories about the people involved.

SUMMARY:Talk and Tarot Reading | The Torah in the Tarot with Stav Appel
DESCRIPTION:Contact Name: Yiddish Book Center Contact Phone: 4132564900 Contact Email: info@yiddishbookcenter.org \n \nVenue Name: Yiddish Book Center \nVenue Address: programs@yiddishbookcenter.org Amherst Massachusetts 01002 \n \nEvent Details: Author Stav Appel presents a provocative thesis: that the early Tarot served as a secret tool for Jewish education during centuries of religious persecution. \nExamining the Jean Noblet Tarot\, created in Paris around 1650\, through a Jewish interpretive lens\, Appel reveals what he believes are hidden Hebrew letters\, Torah narratives\, ritual objects\, and Jewish holidays embedded within the cards’ imagery. \nThis fascinating presentation invites us to reconsider the origins of the Tarot and explore the possibility that a hidden world of Jewish memory and symbolism can be found in its images. \nCome hear the argument\, see the cards\, and reach your own conclusion as to whether a secret Torah has been hiding undetected in an old deck of Tarot cards for nearly four hundred years. \nhttps://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/events/upcoming-public-programs/talk-and-tarot-reading-torah-tarot-stav-appel?utm_source=calendar&utm_medium=remindnews&utm_campaign=talkandtarot
